Photography Class Week 1- Selective Focus

This is the first week of my photography class, and the topic was Selective Focus. I love the look of this, and was excited to finally understand a little better of how to make this happen. The image I chose is of my Christmas village church.

Inspired Christmas

Christmas has finally come and gone.
I've been super busy through the month of December creating gifts for my family.
I wanted to share what I made, mostly because I'm so proud of how it all turned out!
Also, because a little bragging never hurt, right?

First, I made both the kids blankets for their dolls/animals.
Monkey loves his stuffed monkey, and other various stuffed animals, so we got him a doll bed from Ikea, and I made up these comforters and pillows to go with it!

I also made some for Princess and all her dolls.
She is very much into dolls right now, and has several that are very much part of her world.

I also made the kids and hubby their pajamas for Christmas eve.
They loved how they turned out!
{Me too}

I made hubby a carrying case for his new ear bud headphones.
He loves it!

The thing I was so excited about was a Fort Kit, that I'd made the kids to share.
It has 4 sheets in it, along with clothes pins, and rope.
I added a deck of cards for fun too.
{Sorry for the horrible photo, but the kids have already put it to good use!}

Everything turned out awesome and I'm really glad I was able to get it all done!
So, how was your Christmas?
Did you make anything this year?

xoxo

I linked up with Mama Kat and her Writer's Workshop this week!
Check it out for wonderful prompts weekly!

Thankful day 8: Creativity

I'm thankful for being creative!
Sewing and Digi-Scrapping are my crafts of choice.
I'm starting my annual gift this week.
I'm going to start a December Daily album soon as well.

Not to mention we're making Christmas for the kiddos!

One for each kiddo, including mattresses, covers, and pillows.

I'm making this to share

{Hello random tangent}

So yes, I'm thankful for creativity!

Etsy....the Beginning

I know it's been weeks since I last wrote.
I'm still trying to get back into the swing of things. Everywhere in my life.

Christmas was amazing. So wonderful to spend the morning with my kids and listen to them squeal and get excited over every.little.thing. We talked about Santa not coming, and I asked if they were upset or disheartened, and they said no. They were happy with everything they'd gotten.

I went to a conference in Grand Junction, Colorado just after Christmas, and we had a BLAST. It was difficult with 2 kids and just me, but I have the most AWESOME friends in the whole world who were there. And they stepped in to help me, a LOT.

So here I am, 10 days past my "start" date for my Etsy store, and I have a big ol' NUTTIN in it. It's fabulous really. I plan on putting in my "famous" Apple Butter and Watermelon Jam soon. I'm working in my head several different sewing projects as well. My mom sparked my imagination last night at dinner and I'm pretty excited about it, but you'll have to wait to see what I come up with. :)

Lastly, I'm watching prices for strawberries. I've got to make another batch of Strawberry JalapeƱo jam. I made 8 jars or so in August, and it's ALL gone. All of it. Gone. Loved that stuff. So watch for that in my store in the future. :)

For now, you can just go and look at the beautiful logo my mom helped me out with. :) Thanks Mom!

The day mom killed Santa

Recently, we broke the news to my 6 year old daughter, and consequently my 3 year old son about Santa. The topic had long been a debate between my hubby and I as to whether we should continue the Santa thing, or let go of it and fully embrace the Christmas season for what it is truly about, Jesus' birth.

This has not been an easy choice. Not one in the least. Every year we decided to try and do both, and in my eyes at least, it was without much success. The struggle to keep Christ the focus of the holiday was always out weighed by the sparkle in our child's eyes for Santa and what he could bring them. My heart broke every time they said "Santa needs to bring us...." followed by some obscure toy that would usually break within a week of purchase or get thrown to the sidelines. Christ was obviously not their focus, no matter how many times we said, "Christmas is about Jesus' birthday."

The topic of question this season, again, was should we tell our daughter the truth about Santa?

The answer was still the same....how would we do it without breaking the poor child's heart?

The opportunity presented itself in an unexpected way, as is usually the case with God. Everything is unexpected and unusual.

My daughter, son and I were sitting around the table eating dinner. My husband had to work. My daughter brought up that Santa had been the topic of discussion on the kindergarten playground that day, and that while she was all about the jolly fat man, she told her classmates that "Christmas is about Jesus." It's wonderful sometimes to hear my words come back at me out of their mouths. It means that maybe, once in a while, they do hear me.

The playground discussion got turned a bit on my sweet 6 year old, and she came home with one question, was Santa real?

I sat listening to her tell me this story, and I couldn't help but feel that the time had come to give her the truth.

So I did.

I killed Santa Claus.

I asked her a question: After you've opened all your gifts on Christmas morning, does it matter to you who they came from?

While the answer was no, there were still a few tears. Which broke my heart. In the meantime, my sweet 3 year old is standing at the tree telling me that Santa is real.

Then we sat down and talked, again, about the birth of Jesus, and about what part daddy and I played in regards to Santa. Once they both came to an understanding of what I really was trying to get across, and after a zillion questions, they seemed to be okay with things.

Then, about 3 days later, I read this article by Mark Driscoll about what he tells his kids about Santa, and I realized, that Santa could be a part of Christmas, without making him the only reason for Christmas.

So we started discussing Saint Nicholas and what he did to become so influential during the Christmas season.

In retrospect, is what I did right? For us, I think so. Does it break my heart a little? Sure. Is the "magic" of the holiday lost from our home forever. Not hardly. My children still speak of Christmas, and of Saint Nick. About how the individuals at the mall are trying to help others remember the kindness that he showed others, all in the name of Christ. But that Christ gave the greatest gift of all, and that His birth marked the beginning of a new way of life for all of us.

I hope that your Christmas season is blessed this season, and that you too can keep your focus on Him.

An Uninspired Christmas Season

I think life is getting me down.

All the stress and expectations from the holidays...not to mention a project that I just cannot seem to get done. I have had zero inspiration lately to turn on the computer, let alone scrap. It's sad really.

Thankfully all the Christmas gifts we have purchased are wrapped already, and we've put 1 of 2 bikes together.
Thankfully we have a storage shed to store them in after their built state, or we'd have to put them together on Christmas Eve.
Thankfully I was wise {ish?} and thought to do it before the big night.

I'm just excited that Christmas is here {8 sleeps!}, and that soon enough, I won't have to worry about what I didn't get done. Well, in regards to the holiday anyways.

What have you been doing to prepare {or avoid} for Christmas?

Hello everyone out in cyber-land.

I just wanted to pop on and wish you all a happy, healthy & safe Christmas holiday. That you are blessed with wonderful memories, and anything your heart desires.

Today the fam and I are headed up north for Christmas services at our old church, then over to my parents house for the night. :D Christmas came early {last night} and hubby got me a laptop! :D My heart is a little girl. It flies! :D I did a layout and a card in about 1/4 the time it'd take on my other one. :D

Make the most of your day!
